El último día de Sócrates en esta tierra es relatado por Platón en el Fedón: Sócrates empleó las horas que le quedaban de vida en discurrir con sus amigos tebanos, Cebes y Simias, acerca de la inmortalidad del alma. Cuando hubo bebido la cicuta y yacía ya moribundo, sus últimas palabras fueron: "Critón, le debemos un gallo a Esculapio; págaselo, pues, no lo descuides." Cuando el veneno le llegó al corazón, hizo un movimiento convulsivo y expiró, "y Critón, al advertirlo, le cerró la boca y los ojos. Tal fue, o Ejécrates, el fin que tuvo nuestro amigo, hombre del que podemos asegurar que fue el mejor de todos los de su tiempo que hemos conocido, y además el más sabio y el más justo."

The last day of Sócrates in this world is related by Platón in El Fedón: Sócrates spent the last hours of his life talking with his friends, Cebes and Simias, about the inmortality of the soul. When he had drunk the poison and he was fallen and dying, his last words were: "Critón, we must pay back a cock to Esculapio; pay it, don't forget it". When the poison arrived to his heart, he made a movement and died, "and Critón, when he realised about it, closed his mouth and his eyes. It was, Ejécrates, the end of our friend, the man who we can assure that he was the best of all the men of his time that we have known, and the most learned and fair"
